この度、KUWASAWA : Its Philosophy, Legacy, and Evolution という連続した展覧会を桑沢デザイン研究所 教員の鈴木一成先生が構想し、シリーズタイトルを【Bauhaus Perspective】と定め、桑澤洋子氏が築いた教育哲学を受け継ぐデザイナーやアーティストに焦点を当てた展覧会を開催する運びとなりました。

その記念すべき第1回として、写真家・青木健二氏を迎え、鈴木一成先生が Exhibit Developerとして企画・構成を手がけます。

本展では、20世紀初頭にバウハウスから始まった芸術とデザインの運動における独自の視点と理念が、写真表現にどのような影響を与え、どのように昇華されてきたのかを探ります。

「形態の機能性」や「美と機能の融合」といったバウハウスの思想が、当時まだ発展途上であった写真というメディアにどのように作用し、どのような進化を遂げてきたのかに注目し、 桑沢デザイン研究所でバウハウスの教育哲学に触れ、その思想を自身の写真表現へと昇華させた青木健二氏による作品群を展示いたします。

彼の作品を通じて、バウハウスが追求した抽象性、機能性、そして視覚的均衡が写真という表現手段にどのように活かされているのかを感じ取ることができるでしょう。

本展が、バウハウスの理念が時代を超えて現代の視覚芸術にどのように影響を与え続けているのかを再考する機会となれば幸いです。バウハウスの哲学が私たちに何を語りかけ、私たちの視覚的感性をどのように豊かにするのか──本展を通じ、その深層に触れていただければと思います。

This exhibition delves into how deeply the unique perspectives and principles of the Bauhaus movement, which emerged in the early 20th century, have been reinterpreted by photographers into new forms of visual expression. It focuses on how the Bauhaus ideals of “functional form” and “the fusion of beauty and utility” have influenced and evolved within the realm of photography as a visual art. The works on display are by photographers who received a Bauhaus education and incorporated its philosophy into their photographic creations. Through these works, visitors can experience how Bauhaus’s pursuit of abstraction, functionality, and visual balance has been expressed through photography. This exhibition offers a valuable opportunity to rediscover how Bauhaus principles have transcended time and continue to shape contemporary visual arts. We hope that through this exhibition, visitors will engage with the depth of Bauhaus philosophy, gain insight into its message, and appreciate how it enriches our visual sensibilities.

青木 健二（1968年生まれ）
幾何学的、分析的な視点によるStill Life（静物）を専門とする写真家。

クラフトデザイナーである伯父の芳武茂介からデッサンを学び、桑沢デザイン研究所に入学し、バウハウスのデザイン理念を学ぶ中、カジミール・マレーヴィチ『無対象の世界（NON OBJECTIVE WORLD)』に出会い、多大な影響を受ける。『無対象』という東洋における禅や自然哲学のような芸術、0の概念に突き動かされ、写真を通して、形あるものから『無対象』を探し求めるようになる。1993年より、東京を拠点にスティルライフフォトグラファーとして活動を始め、独特の色彩感覚やミニマリズムによる力強く繊細な作風が評価される。2008ニューヨークのフォトグラファーエージェントからオファーを受け、2010年、秋にニューヨークに拠点を移す。『The New York Times Magazine』『TIME』の表紙ならびにCover Storyを数多く手がけ、『THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE PHOTOGRAPHS』edited by Kathy Ryan,『AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY』 に作品が選出されている。2021ドイツKehrer Verlag社から写真集：SPACEを出版。

Kenji Aoki
Photographer who specializes in still life, approaching it from a geometric and analytical perspective.

Kenji Aoki’s creative endeavor started from studying drawings with his uncle, craft designer Mosuke Yoshitake, later enrolling at Kuwasawa Design School and learning the Bauhaus design philosophy, The Non Objective World conceived by Kazimir Malevich. Driven by the concept of “Zero,” art such as Zen and spiritual philosophy in the Orient called “no object,” Kenji began to seek “non-object” from tangible things through photography. Since 1991, Kenji has been active as a still-life photographer, and his delicate and robust style with a unique color sense and minimalism was highly regarded in the industry. In 2008, Kenji started working with NY based photographer agent, Michel Ash and moved to New York in 2010. Since then, he has photographed for renowned publications such as The New York Times Magazine and TIME. and awarded The New York Times Magazine Photographs (edited by Kathy Ryan) and American Photography.
